SIBU: Uncontrolled waste disposal from logging ponds along the Rajang River has been identified as one of the main contributors of the high Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in the river.
Speaking to reporters after giving a talk on environmental programme at a hotel here yesterday, the controller (environmental quality) of Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak Dr Penguang Manggil said that log ponds were currently not subjected to the Environmental Impact Assessment.

SOME time ago, in some tributaries in the upper reaches of the Belaga River in Central Sarawak, hundreds or thousands of dead fish were found floating in the river.
The villagers who had been depending on the fish both for food and income were naturally horrified, and the incident was widely reported in The Borneo Post and other local newspapers.
It was also picked up by several foreign publications which had suggested that the dam construction and logging activities could lie at the root of the problem.

In a statement issued here yesterday, its advisor to the state government, Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit, said it is therefore totally unfair to blame the NREB for “unscrupulous logging” in the upper part of Sungai Tunoh in Kapit.
